A Bolivian immigrant was spared deportation because a Judge feared that separating him from his pet cat would cause him 'serious emotional consequences' – just another example of 'human rights' gone wrong.

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, revealed that the pet cat, called Maya, was a key reason behind the decision to let the man, a Bolivian national, stay in the UK. The man in question had arrived in Britain as a student in 2002 and overstayed his two-year visa. He was only discovered by officials when he was arrested for shoplifting in 2007.

The Bolivian not only argued that he would suffer from being separated from his cat, but also that his pet's quality of life would be affected. Immigration Judge James Devitte allowed the Bolivian to stay in this country under Article 8 of the Human Rights Act – the right to a private and family life.

Initially the Home Office had rejected arguments from the man that removing him would have 'consequences' for Maya. The Home Office's initial ruling stated: 'Although you have a cat called Maya she is considered to be able to adapt to life abroad with her owners.

The Home Office stated; 'While your cat's material quality of life in Bolivia may not be at the same standard as in the United Kingdom, this does not give rise to a right to remain in the United Kingdom.'

But Judge Devitte, who presided over the case, stated unequivocally: 'The evidence concerning the joint acquisition of Maya by the appellant and his partner reinforces my conclusion on the strength and quality of the family life that [the] appellant and his partner enjoy.'

The English Democrats are a party of animal lovers, but to suggest that a man who has no right to live here should be allowed to stay indefinitely because of his cat is taking things a little far. Human rights laws are now being used to turn English law on its head and to elevate the rights of those who have broken the law above those of everyone else.

The English Democrats are wholly opposed to all forms of political correctness where ever they manifest themselves. We must repeal these crazy laws before they turn our whole tried and tested legal system on its head.
