SHOCK, HORROR - REGIONAL ASSEMBLIES REALLY ARE A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY OFFICIAL!
A think tank report - written by a former Labour minister and published with the support of two current Treasury ministers makes sobering reading.
The report found that bureaucrats and unelected "assembly" members across the nine English regions are costing the taxpayer at least £360 million a year - double the level of just five years ago.
They have lacked any kind of popular mandate since voters in the North East rejected the offer of an elected regional assembly by a three to one majority in a referendum three years ago - but Labour has continued to pour money and effort into promoting the assemblies and trying to give them new powers over key areas like planning new houses, airports and roads.
OBVIOUSLY, the report could not and would not recommend that England would be best served by the re-introduction of an English Parliament - Gordon wouldn't like it. So they have concluded that the running of the regions should be rethought to give more power to elected local councillors and elected national MPs.
